Gingival recession, or gum recession, occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth’s root.
Causes of Gingival Recession:
- Brushing Technique: Brushing too hard or using a hard-bristled toothbrush can cause the gums to recede.
- Periodontal Diseases: gum infections, caused by bacteria, that destroy gum tissue and the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place.
- Genetics: Some people may be more susceptible to gum disease especially if they have thin gingiv , regardless of how well they care for their teeth.
- Poor Dental Hygiene: Inadequate brushing, flossing, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash makes it easier for plaque to turn into tartar—a hard substance that can build up on and between your teeth and can lead to recession.
- Hormonal Changes: Changes in hormones, particularly in women during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, can make gums more sensitive and more vulnerable to recession.
- Tobacco Products: Smokers and those who use tobacco products are more likely to have sticky plaque on their teeth that is difficult to remove and can cause gum recession.
- Clenching or Grinding Your Teeth: These habits can put too much force on the teeth, causing gums to recede.
Treatments for Gingival Recession:
An effective treatment for gingival recession is the gingival graft, also known as a gum graft. Here’s how it typically works:
- Assessment: a thorough assessment of the extent of gum recession and the health of your gums, as well as identifying the cause of the recession
- Graft Selection: Depending on your specific condition, we can use different types of grafts and different surgical procedures and techniques
- Procedure: The selected graft will be placed in the area of recession and carefully sutured into place, promoting regeneration of gum tissue and covering exposed roots.
- Recovery and Aftercare: After the surgery, you will be provided with detailed care instructions to ensure proper healing and to prevent further recession.
